Visit Fuji Sengen Shrine, the historic starting point of the mountain pilgrimage, surrounded by ancient woods. Enjoy a peaceful boat ride on Lake Kawaguchi. Spend a full day exploring Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital and a treasure trove of cultural heritage. Visit the serene Arashiyama district, crossing the picturesque Togetsukyo Bridge and touring the UNESCO World Heritage Tenryuji Temple with its enchanting bamboo forest. Tour the famed Kinkakuji “Golden Pavilion,” the Imperial Palace, and the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine with its thousands of vermilion torii gates. Depart for Nikko, arriving mid-morning to visit the ornate Toshogu Shrine, including the “Crying Dragon” chamber. Explore Taiyuinbyo Mausoleum and stroll along the river lined with hundreds of Jizo statues. Free time in Nikko’s town center before traveling to Sendai, a lively city to explore and dine independently. Overnight in Sendai.
Head to Matsushima Bay, known for its scenic “Thousand Islands.” Visit a traditional tea house overlooking the water and enjoy a cup of matcha. Take a 50-minute boat cruise around the bay (included). Continue to Hiraizumi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, touring Chusonji Temple and the peaceful gardens of Motsuiji Temple, where you can participate in a Zen meditation ceremony. See Takkoku no Iwaya, a historic cliff temple carved in 801 AD. End the day in Morioka, capital of Iwate Prefecture, with free time for exploration.
Visit Hirosaki Castle surrounded by thousands of cherry trees (seasonal). Continue to Aomori to explore the Nebuta Museum, showcasing vibrant floats from traditional festivals. Lunch included. Board a ferry to Hokkaido Island’s Hakodate port (3.5 hours). Upon arrival, ascend Mount Hakodate via cable car for spectacular night views. Morning visit to Hakodate’s bustling fish market and climb Goryokaku Tower for views of the star-shaped fortress below. Stroll through the historic castle grounds. Travel to Onuma Quasi-National Park, known for its picturesque islands—free time to explore or take a boat ride. Lunch included. Continue to Noboribetsu, famous for volcanic activity.
